Maybe it’s just me.

Maybe you’ve spotted it before.

What do they say…familiarity breeds contempt?

It’s there in John’s gospel: “He came to that which was his own” (John 1:11).

So simple. So matter-of-fact.

Jesus. Pre-existent. Came.

To something which already belonged to him.

No, not just which belonged to him. But something he had made, had created.

What was it?

The earth. Creation. People.

Do you see it? Sense it? Feel it?

The mystery.

Jesus. God. Incarnation. Immanuel.

God stepping down. Stepping into.

And then the sadness.

“He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him” (John 1:11).

Rejected.

By those whom he had created.
