    Francis is a writer of non-fiction who is creeping up cautiously towards the novel, but who has stopped off along the way to write the book about Christianity that he really wanted someone else to get around to: the one that tries to explain from scratch, to people who don’t believe, how it works emotionally. (Short answer: very differently from the way people think.) But no-one seem to want to write it for him, so he did it himself.
