If the first 17 verses of Matthew place Jesus as the culmination of a human family tree, with
real human ancestry, then the next eight verses give us the other side of the picture.
Mary was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
“An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit’” (Matthew 1:20).
“All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’)” (Matthew 1:22-23).
Holy Spirit. Angel. Virgin. Immanuel.
Jesus Christ.
Fully human. Fully divine.
